Concept
We want to infuse a rejuvenated and contemporary perception of Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street and make it appealing to a younger market. Our approach will maintain some of Bewley’s old homely charm while applying a “trendy” twist. Capitalising on its history with the Irish Arts, we want to create a space for young creatives to visit with their friends and bring Bewley’s back to the bustling saloon that it once was. We aim to increase their presence through social media and events such as exhibitions, open mic nights and poetry readings. We want the Bewley’s customers to go home with new fond memories all the while appreciating its history.
Website
For the final website we used the same two colours to relate to the rest of the branding. The main image on the home page is the Grafton street building and is well know by Bewley’s customers. We wanted to make the website quick and easy to navigate for the user. We thought, people who drink coffee are always on the go, so a quick and simple website would work for the consumer.
The navigation was a big part of this, when scrolling down the page the drop down menu bar will always be there. By having this you can get to one page to the other faster. We also used white space for the branding colour to stand out and to make a connection with memory.

Posters
For the posters we wanted Bewley’s to be able to promote their different events, while using the same theme and style as the rest of our products. We stuck to the main two colours. Either there is a big square of colour or the photograph will be treated as a duotone in one of the colours. The text is kept very minimal in order to put focus on the artist.

Packaging
For the final design, we took three key motifs from the Harry Clark windows and created patterns which we then applied to each box. We stripped the patterns of their colour to make them less busy looking and more like a set. We felt that the white against the coloured backgrounds put emphasis on the patterns. We chose three colours that are incorporated multiple times throughout the building front façade and the stained glass windows. We then took these patterns and also applied them to to-go cups so you can take a little piece of Bewley’s with you.

Timeline
The illustrative style reflected on Bewley’s association with supporting Irish arts. We did a horizontal timeline and also a vertical timeline. The vertical was used for the mock up of the website and the horizontal was how the timeline would actually be used within the space of the cafe. In terms of colour we tried using the colour palette we had been using for the whole project which was a blue and red.
App
We wanted to incorporate the illustrative style from the packaging design and timeline into our app design. We decided to do this by using the same vine illustrations as the collectable tea box as the background for the app. We also stuck with just the two main colours for everything. We created little logos for the menu bar that we thought would best represent the two sections of the app. A mic for the events and a mini coffee cut for the coffee card.

While we would like to open up Bewley’s market to a younger audience, we also realise that we need to maintain it’s traditional older customers. We also want to provide for the abundance of tourists that visit Bewley’s each year.

Bewley’s has been on Grafton street since the 1920’s. Since then it has closed and re-opened three times. Bewley’s is a long standing national treasure. It has a wonderful charm that is uniquely Irish and has an abundance of history to it. We believe that this heritage and its long association with the Irish Arts has huge potential to become popular again with the help of the digital age. In order to engage with the younger generation, we want to utilise the potential of apps and social media
